As we mentioned in previous blogs, in summer an excellent activity to do as a family is u pick crops. In this blog, we’ll go over picking blackberries in Washington State.
Washington blackberries come in a wide range of varieties, from large and sweet to thornless and tart. Get your blackberry fix at one of the state’s berry farms before the season ends! Make sure to call each farm prior to heading out to double-check their availability.

When Are Blackberries in Season in Washington?
Washington blackberries are in season from May through September, although they typically peak in July and August. Peak blackberry season differs depending on where you live in the United States, but in the Northwest you’ll see blackberry harvests peaking later in the season (late August and September).

Bill’s Berry Farm
You’ll find Bill’s Berry Farm north of Grandview, Washington in the heart of the Yakima Valley. Owners Bill and Julie grew up on farms in the same valley and now have one of their own where they grow a wide range of produce, from gourds to berries.
Enjoy their early-ripening, large Natchez blackberries along with their sweet-bursting Ouachitas, or thornless and flavorful Triple Crown varieties. Whether you have plans for jam, pies, or fresh-from-the-bush snacking, you’re sure to get your blackberry fix at Bill’s.

Biringer Farm
Biringer Farm, located North of Seattle in Arlington, has been supplying fresh berries and produce to the area since 1948. Before that, Viktoria and Michael Biringer bred chickens in Pennsylvania to sell to New York city markets.
Along with blackberries, Biringer Farms harvests raspberries, tayberries, strawberries, blueberries, and black caps for you to enjoy a full-on medley.

Broers Farms
Broers Farm in Monroe, Washington is an organic berry farm harvesting thornless blackberries, an array of other berries, including marionberries, as well as green beans and sunflowers available for u-pick.
Peak picking season differs for each crop, so call the farm before heading out to make sure their blackberries are still available.

Bryant Blueberry Farm and Nursery
Don’t let the name confuse you: Bryant Blueberry Farm has more than just blueberries. They also harvest blackberries, tayberries (a cross between blackberries and raspberries), boysenberries, and red and black currants.
Whether it’s still blackberry season or not, you can enjoy Bryant’s berries year-round by buying them frozen directly from the farm.

Picha’s Berry Farm
Picha’s offers we-pick strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries at both of their locations; one in Tacoma, and the other just South in Puyallup.
For those who opt not to u-pick, all berries are available as a single cup or by the box as six cups. You can count on some of the freshest, best-tasting berries at Picha’s since they’re hand-picked during the cool, early hours every morning.

Wild Blackberries in Washington State
You don’t have to go to a farm to pick blackberries in Washington state: Wild blackberries are abundant, if you only know where to look.
Magnuson Park
Magnuson Park is located in the Sand Point neighborhood and ranks as the second largest park in the city, right after Discovery Park. It spans 350 acres with over four miles of walking trails where you can scout out wild blackberries.
If you’re looking for an opportunity for more blackberry picking on your way out to the park, explore the Burke Gilman Trail, which has plenty of blackberry bushes scattered about before heading into Magnuson.

Bridle Trails State Park
Nestled between Kirkland and Redmond just east of Seattle is Bridle Trails State Park, where you’ll find an abundance of Himalayan blackberries. This 489-acre park holds 28 miles of trails with wild blackberry bramble patches scattered about.
Supposedly some of the biggest bramble patches are near or around the power line poles throughout the park. Get your picks before they’re gone!

Watershed Park
Head over to Watershed Park in the state’s capital of Olympia for more wild berries and rich history.
The park was set to be logged and sold back in 1955, but citizens heavily opposed the logging. The case eventually landed in the Supreme Court, and the park was declared a preserved and protected area.
Enjoy blackberries and an abundance of salmonberries throughout the park’s extensive trail system spanning over 150 acres.
